The primary composition of citrus juices has been known for a long time and several organizations have published lists of the major juice nutritional components and of the amounts that can be expected to be found in natural, safe and wholesome juices. These lists are used as guidelines when examining juices for regulatory and safety compliance.

In the last few years, as the health benefits of fruit juices are being explored and reported, a major effort has been undertaken by many major laboratories across the world to compile lists of all the phytochemicals present in juices. Many of these components occur in very small amounts and some are unique to citrus. Continuing research is dedicated toward determining the interactions and health benefits of the complex mixture of nutrients that make up citrus juices.
