The major by-products of citrus processing plants are citrus peel and essential oils. Most processors pelletize the dried pulp in order to reduce volume and cut shipping and storage costs, and the resulting product is known as CPP & Citrus Pulp Pellets. Citrus peel oils, and citrus essential or juice oils are also collected during fruit processing and are commonly used in flavor and perfumery industries, and in citrus-based solvent manufacturing. Recent research has also shown that citrus peel and other waste materials may be converted into fuel-grade ethanol. Other uses for citrus peel waste are under current investigation.
